Eight other players who were near him went down too, all in unison

A 39-year-old soccer player in Peru was killed instantly on Sunday when he got struck by lightning while walking across the field. The player who died was Jose Hugo de la Cruz Meza. The team's goalie took a direct hit as well, but survived with serious burns. Several others were also hospitalized. They were 22 minutes into the match when it got suspended because of weather. The players were walking off the field when it happened.
