In Margate, a grassroots movement is underway to restore $500,000 in federal funding for Lucy the Elephant, a cherished Jersey Shore landmark. Last month, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, announced the removal of discretionary funds initially allocated by Senator Cory Booker for Lucy's renovations. These funds were intended for critical updates, including a new fire suppression system, according to Lucy's Executive Director Richard Helfant.
Since the announcement, supporters have raised $8,000 to help cover the funding gap. Helfant has submitted an application for a grant from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority to offset the loss and is planning several fundraisers to support the effort. As reported by the Philly Voice, the impact of the funding cut has not yet been felt, giving Lucy some time to recover the lost funds.
Renovations are on hold until a new gift shop is completed, with construction scheduled to begin in September. Built in 1881, Lucy the Elephant has survived demolition threats and undergone multiple renovations thanks to public support.
