A recent study by WalletHub ranks New Jersey as the 28th best state for drivers in the United States. The Garden State stands out in the safety category, where it ranks fifth among all states. However, New Jersey faces challenges with rush hour traffic and congestion, ranking 43rd in these areas.
The study, which compares all 50 states across 31 key indicators of a positive commute, evaluates factors such as average gas prices, road quality, and traffic congestion. According to WalletHub, the average driver spent 43 hours in traffic in 2024, costing them approximately $771.
While New Jersey excels in safety, it struggles with traffic congestion, which affects the overall driving experience. The state’s ranking reflects a balance between these factors, placing it in the middle of the pack.
The study highlights the importance of well-maintained roads and disciplined drivers in creating a positive driving environment. As New Jersey continues to address its traffic challenges, the state aims to improve its overall ranking in the future.
