Atlantic City is gearing up for significant road improvements in 2024, with three major projects set to commence this year. The Atlantic City Engineering Office will host a Public Information Center on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the Atlantic Cape Community College Worthington Campus. The event will provide detailed information about the upcoming projects and give residents and local business owners the chance to review the plans.
The first project involves safety improvements on Atlantic Avenue. This includes milling and paving from Tennessee to Albany Avenues, synchronization of signals, enhanced street lighting, and a three-lane "Road Diet" configuration from Mississippi to Albany Avenues. The five-lane configuration will remain from Tennessee to Mississippi Avenues.
The "Road Diet" is a scheme that aims to reduce traffic lanes to improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians. It has been an ongoing initiative in Atlantic City, with the first phase starting in July 2022.
The second project focuses on Baltic Avenue. It includes a full-width milling and paving from Maine to Missouri Avenues, upgrading ADA ramps, thermoplastic striping, and sidewalk and curb improvements where necessary.
Finally, Pacific Avenue will see signal optimization, including the installation of fiber-optic cable and the synchronization of signals from Hartford to Massachusetts Avenues. Fiber will also be installed between Pacific Avenue, City Hall, and the Public Safety Building to manage the system. Full-width paving restoration will occur on any roads impacted by the fiber installation.
